I teach creative writing, reading comprehension, and SPaG in small online groups (no more than five students) so your child gets the attention they actually need. I'm a qualified primary teacher with over eight years' experience, and I specialise in English.
Book a PlacePractice papers alone won't prepare your child for the 11+ English exam. What will is a genuine understanding of how to write well, how to read closely and how to use grammar with confidence. That's what my 11+ English tuition is built around: foundational skills first, exam technique second.
Every lesson is planned around the three core areas tested in the grammar school entrance exam: creative writing, reading comprehension, and spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG). I structure each unit so skills build progressively, and I run assessments at the beginning and end of every unit so you can see exactly where your child started and how far they've come. Between lessons, your child gets weekly homework with personalised feedback from me, because the learning shouldn't stop when the session ends.
Get Started TodayI teach your child how to write with purpose: story structure, character development, descriptive language and literary devices. We don't just talk about these techniques; I show them what strong writing looks like, then we practise it together. Narrative writing, descriptive pieces, letters, diary entries: all commonly tested in the 11 Plus English exam, and all covered in depth.
Your child will learn how to read closely, retrieve key information, make inferences and explain an author's language choices with confidence. I use fiction, non-fiction and poetry extracts to build the analytical reading skills the 11+ comprehension papers demand. We also do timed practice, because knowing the skill is one thing. Doing it under exam conditions is another.
A strong command of SPaG underpins everything in the 11+ English exam: both the writing and the comprehension. I cover grammar rules, punctuation conventions, word classes, verb tenses and those tricky spelling patterns that keep appearing in entrance exams. We also work on vocabulary building through prefixes, suffixes and root words. The goal is for your child to use these skills naturally, not just recognise them in a worksheet.
Whether your child is just starting their 11+ preparation or you need focused support in the months before the exam, I structure my tuition around realistic timelines for both year groups.
My lessons follow a clear programme with weekly objectives, homework and assessments. If your child responds well to routine and likes knowing what's coming next, this is a great fit.
If your child finds creative writing challenging or struggles to answer comprehension questions in enough depth, my 11+ English tuition targets exactly these skills with guided practice and detailed feedback.
My small group classes run on a regular weekly schedule, giving your child ongoing support rather than one-off sessions. Consistency is key to building the skills and confidence needed for the 11+.
Every child is different. Drop me a message and I'll help you work out the best path forward for your child's needs and goals.
Ask EmmaMy 11+ English tuition covers the three core areas tested in most grammar school entrance exams: creative writing, reading comprehension and SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). I structure each unit so skills build progressively, and I run assessments at the start and end so you can track exactly how your child is improving.
All lessons take place live on Google Meet in small groups of no more than five students. Your child gets real-time interaction with me and their peers, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and receive individual feedback. All you need is a laptop or tablet and a stable internet connection.
Most families begin 11+ preparation in Year 4, which gives around 12 to 18 months of steady practice before the exam. That said, children in Year 5 can still make significant progress with focused, consistent tuition. If you're not sure about timing, just get in touch. I'm happy to advise on the best starting point for your child.
