Skills First, Exam Technique Second

Online 11+ English Preparation

I teach children to write well, read closely and use grammar accurately first. Exam papers come once those skills are in place.
No more than five students per class, so every child has time to ask questions and share their work.
Weekly homework with personalised feedback, plus assessments at the start and end of every unit so you can see how far they've come.
I teach your child how to write with purpose: story structure, character development, descriptive language and literary devices. I show them what strong writing looks like, then we practise it together. I cover narrative writing, descriptive pieces, letters and diary entries, the forms that come up most in 11+ English papers.
Your child will learn how to read closely, retrieve key information, make inferences and explain an author's language choices with confidence. I use fiction, non-fiction and poetry extracts to build the analytical reading skills the 11+ comprehension papers demand. We also do timed practice, so your child can use these skills under exam conditions.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar are tested in many 11+ papers, and they help your child make sense of the comprehension questions too. I teach the rules children need, from word classes and verb tenses to commas and apostrophes, along with the spelling patterns that keep turning up in entrance exams. We also look at prefixes, suffixes and root words, which helps with spelling and with working out unfamiliar words. Then we practise using all of it in your child's own writing.
Your child might be starting out in Year 4 or need focused support in the months before the exam. I plan around the time you have left.
My lessons follow a clear programme with weekly objectives, homework and assessments. If your child responds well to routine and likes knowing what's coming next, my lessons will suit them.
If your child finds creative writing challenging or struggles to answer comprehension questions in enough depth, my lessons target these skills with guided practice and detailed feedback.
My small groups meet at the same time each week, so your child keeps building on what they learnt the week before, right up to the exam.
My 11+ English tuition covers the three core areas of 11+ English: creative writing, reading comprehension and SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). I structure each unit so skills build progressively, and I run assessments at the start and end so you can see how your child is improving.
All lessons take place live on Google Meet, in small groups of no more than five students or one-to-one. Your child gets real-time interaction with me, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and receive individual feedback. All you need is a laptop or tablet and a stable internet connection.
Most families begin 11+ preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5, which gives one to two years of steady practice before the exam in the autumn of Year 6 (between November and January for most independent schools). Children in Year 5 can still make significant progress with focused, consistent tuition. If you're not sure about timing, just get in touch. I'm happy to advise on the best starting point for your child.
I'm a qualified primary teacher with a Bachelor of Education and a specialism in English Literature. Wordy Classroom focuses exclusively on English, so all my planning goes into one subject.
I do. If you'd prefer private one-to-one tuition, I offer private lessons planned around your child. Get in touch to check availability and we can discuss what would work best.
“From my son's experience, he said Emma is the best tutor. He passed his Sutton stage 2 for Wilson's, Wallington and Sutton grammar schools. Also Tiffin stage 1, thanks to her lessons on comprehension and creative writing. My son said she is kind and will explain any questions deeply. She does fun exercises that make you think of writing ideas quickly. I would really recommend this tutor as I can see great improvement in my son.”
“Emma is an exceptional English teacher who creates a welcoming, friendly, and supportive learning environment. She explains concepts clearly and effectively, and her excellent pronunciation helps students develop strong language and communication skills. Her homework feedback is very clear and constructive, ensuring that students understand their mistakes and continue to improve. With a small group size of only five students, every child receives individual attention, and she is always available to answer questions and clarify any doubts. Since my daughter started attending Emma’s classes, I have seen a remarkable improvement in her confidence, and overall understanding of the subject. I highly recommend Emma to any parent looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable, and inspiring English teacher.”
