I teach the reading, writing and grammar skills assessed in Year 6, then add SATs-style practice once those skills are in place.
I mark your child's work and explain where marks are gained and lost.
I give your child strategies they can use on exam day, so the same errors stop repeating.
I teach your child how to approach SATs reading papers strategically: how to find evidence in the text, how to answer inference questions and how to tackle those tricky three-mark questions that ask for explanation and justification. We practise with SATs-style passages so the format is familiar.
I cover everything on the two SPaG papers: word classes, verb tenses, sentence types, punctuation rules and spelling patterns. I teach the rules clearly, then we apply them in exam-style questions. Your child learns each grammar point well enough to explain it back to me in their own words.
Year 6 writing isn't a test paper. Your child's teacher assesses it from their work across the year, and it counts towards their end-of-KS2 results. I help your child plan their writing, organise it into paragraphs, vary their sentences and choose their words carefully, and I mark each piece with notes on what to improve next.
I work on the spelling patterns and rules that come up in SATs, plus the statutory word lists. Spellings are revisited over several weeks so they stay learnt.
I show your child how to manage their time across the papers, how to check their work effectively and how to approach questions they find tricky without losing confidence. We practise under timed conditions so exam day feels familiar.
If your child is in Year 6, I'll prepare them for the English reading paper and the two grammar, punctuation and spelling papers. We focus on the areas where they'll gain marks fastest.
Some ten-year-olds get very anxious about tests. I keep lessons calm and encouraging, build confidence through repeated success and show them what to do when a question stumps them, so one hard question doesn't derail the rest of the paper.
If your child has worked through past papers at home but keeps losing marks in the same places, I'll find out why and teach the skill that's missing.
For KS2 SATs, most families start early in Year 6. That gives enough time to build skills properly without cramming. The earlier in the year you start, the less pressure there is.
I do. I use past papers from the Standards and Testing Agency alongside materials I've written myself. Everything is matched to the current format and standard.
We meet on Google Meet. I share SATs-style questions on screen, your child works through them and I give real-time feedback. Between lessons, I mark any written work and send you detailed comments so you can see how they're doing.
If your child is already strong, SATs tuition can help them reach the higher score thresholds. The top-mark questions require very specific skills (explaining an inference with evidence, the three-mark 'explain' questions) and I make sure they know how to hit those.
It can. I'll identify the gaps and work on closing them. I won't overwhelm your child with content that's too advanced. I start where they are and build up.
“Emma is an exceptional English teacher who creates a welcoming, friendly, and supportive learning environment. She explains concepts clearly and effectively, and her excellent pronunciation helps students develop strong language and communication skills. Her homework feedback is very clear and constructive, ensuring that students understand their mistakes and continue to improve. With a small group size of only five students, every child receives individual attention, and she is always available to answer questions and clarify any doubts. Since my daughter started attending Emma’s classes, I have seen a remarkable improvement in her confidence, and overall understanding of the subject. I highly recommend Emma to any parent looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable, and inspiring English teacher.”
“Emma has been an exceptional teacher for my son's 11+ preparation. She is highly knowledgeable and incredibly versatile, confidently covering a wide range of topics and adapting to different curriculum requirements with ease. She is always well-organised, patient and fully committed to her pupil's success, ensuring each lesson is both productive and engaging. Most importantly, my son genuinely enjoys his classes and looks forward to every session with her, which speaks volumes about her teaching approach and ability to motivate.”
“Emma is an outstanding and highly professional English teacher, and we couldn't be happier with the results she has achieved with our daughter. Over the past 9 months of 1:1 lessons, Emma has created such an engaging, patient, and positive learning atmosphere. Her enthusiasm for teaching truly shines through in every session. When we first started, Clairisse needed quite a bit of extra help with her writing and comprehension. Thanks to Emma's targeted guidance, we saw an incredible leap in her progress over the last 3-4 months before her exam - so much so that she successfully passed both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Sutton 11+ exams! I would highly recommend Emma to absolutely anyone looking to help their child improve in English.”
