A short task after each lesson, with marked work and comments sent back by email.

Topics and Skills Covered

Reading Comprehension

I teach your child how to tackle every question type they'll face: vocabulary, retrieval, inference, summarising, prediction, comparison and authorial intent. We work with a range of text types so they can handle fiction, non-fiction and poetry with confidence. As well as checking answers, I show them how to find evidence and explain their thinking clearly.

Writing Composition

I teach your child how to plan, structure and write extended pieces across different genres: narratives, persuasive letters, balanced arguments, diary entries and more. We focus on what teachers look for when they assess writing: varied sentence structures, purposeful vocabulary, clear organisation and a strong authorial voice.

SPaG: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

I work through the full KS2 grammar curriculum systematically: word classes, clauses, the passive voice, the subjunctive and semicolons. I teach the rules in a way that makes sense, then we practise applying them in context. We spend the most time on the patterns your child finds tricky.

Spelling Patterns and Vocabulary

I cover the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 statutory spelling lists alongside the spelling rules and patterns tested in the SATs. Spelling lessons look at why words are spelt the way they are and what they mean, through roots, prefixes and suffixes, as well as the usual look, cover, write, check.

Who KS2 English Tuition Is For

Children in Years 3 to 5 Who Need Additional Support

You don't have to wait until Year 6 to start. If your child is struggling with reading comprehension, finding writing difficult or falling behind on grammar, earlier support means less pressure later.

Year 6 Children Preparing for SATs

If the Year 6 SATs are the main goal, my SATs tuition is built around the papers. KS2 lessons stay focused on the wider English curriculum, with SATs practice added when it is useful.

Children Working Towards Greater Depth

If your child is already meeting expectations and you want to push for greater depth, I can challenge them with more demanding texts, complex writing tasks and advanced grammar. That is the work that earns top marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a typical KS2 English tuition session look like?

It depends on what your child needs, but a typical session includes a reading or SPaG activity, a focused teaching segment on a specific skill and a short writing or application task. I plan each lesson around what your child is working on at the time.

How is this different from SATs preparation?

My SATs Tuition focuses on Year 6 and the run-up to the SATs papers. KS2 English tuition is broader: it builds the underlying skills your child needs across reading, writing and grammar, even if SATs are years away.

How often should my child have lessons?

Weekly sessions work best for most children. That gives us enough time to build skills properly without overloading them. If Year 6 SATs are approaching and there's ground to cover, we can temporarily increase to twice a week. I'll tell you after the first lesson how much ground there is to cover.

My child finds writing really difficult. Can you help?

Yes, writing is one of the areas I work on most. A lot of children know what they want to say but can't get it onto paper in a structured way. I break it down: planning, paragraphing, sentence variety, vocabulary choices. We build it up piece by piece until they can write confidently and independently.

Do you set homework between sessions?

I do. I set a short task after each lesson and send marked work and comments back by email.

What Parents Say

“Emma is a good teacher and a real encouragement to whom she teaches. My son says during his 11+ preparation, Emma makes the lessons fun with a Baamboozle and she is very patient. When he gets any questions wrong, Emma would help him understand the fundamentals. With no doubt, my son was blessed to have Emma for his 11+ journey and my son has chosen to qualify Emma with these 5 words:
Patient
Humorous
Encouraging
Highly strategic
Helpful”

Ola11+ Parent

“As a parent, I’m very pleased with the teaching style and support provided. The classes are engaging, enjoyable, and well-structured, which has helped my son.
The feedback given is always focused and constructive, and useful learning resources are provided to practise further and improve on weaker areas.
Lessons are kept simple, clear, and focused, making it easier for my son to follow and improve his learning. Thank you, Emma.”

NazrinishaParent

“From my son's experience, he said Emma is the best tutor. He passed his Sutton stage 2 for Wilson's, Wallington and Sutton grammar schools. Also Tiffin stage 1, thanks to her lessons on comprehension and creative writing. My son said she is kind and will explain any questions deeply. She does fun exercises that make you think of writing ideas quickly. I would really recommend this tutor as I can see great improvement in my son.”
