Why These Papers
Written in the Tiffin Format
Tiffin does not publish past papers, only a short set of illustrative questions. I have followed their sections and question styles closely, so your child gets a feel for the format and level of difficulty.
Answers You Can Mark With
The Stage 1 answer key explains every answer. The Stage 2 marking scheme has model answers and the mark bands I use when I mark creative writing.
Pitched at Year 5 and Year 6
Tiffin expects the Year 5 National Curriculum for English, and these papers are written at that level. A Year 4 child can sit Stage 1 untimed as a first look at the question types.
Understanding the Tiffin English Test
Stage 1: Multiple Choice
Around 40 to 60 minutes of multiple-choice questions on vocabulary, a cloze passage, a reading extract, grammar, spelling and punctuation, answered on a separate answer sheet. Stage 1 decides who goes through to Stage 2.
Stage 2: Written Paper
About the same length as Stage 1, with handwritten answers: crossing out redundant words, written comprehension answers, explaining a joke, rewriting sentences, explaining figurative language and a piece of creative writing. This is the stage where your child's writing is assessed.

Are these official Tiffin papers?
No. Tiffin does not publish past papers. I have written these papers myself in the format of the illustrative questions Tiffin School publishes, with the same sections and style of question.
Which year group are the papers for?
Year 5 and Year 6 children preparing for the Tiffin test. Tiffin says its tests assume the Year 5 National Curriculum for English, and the papers are written at that level. A Year 4 child can sit the Stage 1 paper untimed as a first look at the question types.
Do the papers come with answers?
