SATs practice papers are useful, but working through them without targeted feedback can hinder progress. Your child ends up repeating the same errors and losing the same marks.
In every lesson, I combine genuine skills teaching with SATs-focused practice. I work through past paper questions with your child, but I also teach the underlying reading comprehension and grammar skills that the papers are testing. I mark their work, explain exactly where marks are gained and lost, and give them specific strategies they can use on exam day.

1. Reading Comprehension
I teach your child how to approach SATs reading papers strategically: how to find evidence in the text, how to answer inference questions and how to tackle those tricky three-mark questions that ask for explanation and justification. We practise with real SATs-style passages so the format is familiar.
2. Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS)
I cover everything on the GPS paper: word classes, verb tenses, sentence types, punctuation rules and spelling patterns. I teach the rules clearly, then we apply them in exam-style questions. I make sure your child understands the grammar, not just memorises definitions.
3. Spelling
I work on the specific spelling patterns and rules that come up in SATs, plus the statutory word lists. I use structured practice that helps your child retain spellings long-term, not just cram them the night before.
4. Exam Technique and Time Management
I show your child how to manage their time across the papers, how to check their work effectively and how to approach questions they find tricky without losing confidence. We practise under timed conditions so exam day feels familiar.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should we start SAT tuition?
For KS2 SATs, most families start in Year 5 or early Year 6. That gives enough time to build skills properly without cramming. For KS1, a term or two before assessments is usually plenty. But honestly, the earlier you start, the less pressure there is.
Do you use real SATs papers?
Yes. I use past papers from the Department for Education alongside materials I've written myself. Everything is matched to the current format and standard.
How do online SATs lessons work?
We meet on Google Meet. I share SATs-style questions on screen, your child works through them and I give real-time feedback. Between lessons, I mark any written work and send you detailed comments so you can see exactly how they're doing.
My child already does well in English. Do they still need SAT tuition?
If your child is already strong, SAT tuition can help them reach the higher score thresholds. The top-mark questions require very specific skills (inference chains, precise use of evidence, multi-clause sentence explanations) and I make sure they know exactly how to hit those.
Can SAT tuition help if my child is well below expected level?
Yes. I'll identify the specific gaps and work on closing them. I won't overwhelm your child with content that's too advanced. I start where they are and build up. Confidence comes from experiencing success, so that's always where I begin.
